The lie

The devil is the biggest liar there is. His main aim is to deceive you and I. To present half truths and twist stories misdirecting our focus. Guess what?, he has been successful at this since the first man walked the earth. But not anymore. One of the many people the enemy has managed to direct our focus from, is the man Jonah.

Everyone knows the story of Jonah, the man that got swallowed up by a fish. Today, I present to you, Jonah, The Great Evangelist.

Here is a man of God whose ministry is characterized by supernatural encounters. After he refuses to go preach to the people of Nineveh, he flees in another direction. A series of events are set before him as signs that he was headed in the wrong way. Finally, he is thrown into the sea to die.

Three days in a fish

In expressing his riches in mercy, the Lord God had a big fish swallow up Jonah.

The whale shark is the biggest known fish. It measures about 41.5 feet in length and could grow weigh 21.5 tonnes. If the average human is 6 feet tall, it will take approximately 7 people lined up, head to toe, to make the full length of a whale shark.

A fully grown whale shark is about the size of a 40-50 seater bus.

It is still a mystery, how Jonah survived in the belly of the whale for so long. He prayed from this place, and the Lord heard him. But of course, our God is able to do all things; Jonah was vomited unto dry land, alive, after three days and nights.

About Nineveh

Nineveh was the capital of the great Assyrian empire, a great city at the time. It was so big, it took three days to walk from one end to another. Not to mention a population of over a hundred and twenty thousand (120,000) people. Nineveh today, is located at the northern part of Iraq, on the outskirts of the city of Mosul.

“So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days’ journey.” ‭‭Jonah‬ ‭3:3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“But Nineveh has more than 120,000 people living in spiritual darkness, not to mention all the animals. Shouldn’t I feel sorry for such a great city?”” ‭‭Jonah‬ ‭4:11‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The Crusade

Once Jonah entered this great city, he started preaching. Right from the King of Nineveh to all it’s people heard his message. Jonah’s message was clear and straight to the point…

“And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.” ‭‭Jonah‬ ‭3:4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

The king declared a fast, which all took part in. At the end of the day, over 120,000 people fasted and prayed for mercy. This touched God’s heart and he took back his decision of destroying the city.

Lessons Learnt

  1. We will face many life threatening storms when we fall out of the will of God.
  2. The story of Jonah does not end after he was swallowed up by the whale.
  3. God is merciful, He gives second chances; He gave Jonah a second chance; He gave the people of Nineveh a second chance.
  4. Jonah is possibly the first known Evangelist to win over a hundred and twenty thousand souls in a single crusade.
